"Quite possibly one of the best locations for a cafe" - Lonely Planet.
Take in the stunning surrounds whilst enjoying a refreshment at our Astro Café, located at the summit of Ōtehīwai (Mt John).
The daytime café boasts some of the world’s best views including the Mackenzie Basin, Aoraki Mt Cook and Lake Takapō (Tekapo). Enjoy the picturesque walking tracks or take in the views from our observation deck. It is simply breathtaking.
The café offers a wide selection of hot and cold drinks and barista-made coffee. Enjoy a bite to eat from their cabinet selection including a range of savoury and sweet options to suit everyone. Their Saturn themed cappuccino and popular carrot cake are always a favourite amongst visitors, although nothing compares to the views on offer!
Opening hours: Astro Cafe is currently closed as a response to COVID 19.
Please note cabinet selection remains available after the kitchen closes. The Astro Café may be closed in certain weather conditions - in this instance the entrance to Mt John will be shut.
Astro Café is located at the summit Ōtehīwai, Mt John. Access is from Godley Peaks Road, off State Highway 8 between Takapō (Tekapo) and Lake Pukaki. An $8 per car road-user fee applies (payable at gate - cash, EFTPOS and Alipay available). This fee contributes to the ongoing maintenance of the access road. The access road is open despite the Astro Cafe closure.
The Astro Café is a short (15 minute to summit) drive from Takapō, or a brisk 45 minute walk on a stunning, well maintained track that climbs through forest and grasslands. We recommend suitable walking footwear and attire, and a reasonable level of fitness. Please note vehicles with over 23 seat capacity are no permitted due to tight corners. Commercial tour operators are required to contact us prior on +64 3 680 6960.
