The Summit Experience
New Zealand’s Highest Stargazing Tour
Journey to the summit of Mount John for an unforgettable stargazing adventure at New Zealand’s only professional research observatory. The Summit Experience offers exclusive access to the southernmost facility of its kind in the world, set within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Guided by expert astronomy storytellers, you’ll explore the cosmos using the naked eye, lasers, and powerful telescopes - including a 16” telescope inside our private observatory dome. The Crater Experience

Step into the cosmos with our fully guided Virtual Stargazing Experience, held inside the purpose-built theatre at the Dark Sky Project Base in Takapō. Using advanced space-rendering technology, our expert guides take you on a breathtaking journey through the galaxy - from the Southern Cross to Saturn’s rings—without ever stepping outside. This 45-minute indoor evening experience is perfect for families, first-time stargazers, and anyone short on time. With storytelling, science, and stunning visuals, it’s always a clear night inside. Suitable for ages 5+, with content best enjoyed by ages 7 and up.
