The Summit Experience
New Zealand’s Highest Stargazing Tour
Journey to the summit of Mount John for an unforgettable stargazing adventure at New Zealand’s only professional research observatory. The Summit Experience offers exclusive access to the southernmost facility of its kind in the world, set within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Guided by expert astronomy storytellers, you’ll explore the cosmos using the naked eye, lasers, and powerful telescopes - including a 16” telescope inside our private observatory dome. Discover celestial wonders and cultural insights from both Māori and Western perspectives in one of the clearest night skies on Earth. The Crater Experience

The Dark Sky Experience
A Journey Through Space, Science and Storytelling
Step inside our world-class indoor astronomy centre at the Dark Sky Project Base in Takapō for a 45-minute guided experience that will forever change the way you see the night sky. Our daytime café at the top of Ōtehīwai Mount John, boasts some of the best views across the Mackenzie Basin, Lake Takapō (Tekapo) and up to Aoraki Mt Cook.
The Astro Café serves a range of drinks, including delicious barista-made coffees. Our cabinet food selection includes sweet and savoury options which are sure to have your mouth watering while you take in the views on offer.
