Over a century ago, Albert Einstein predicted the existence of ripples in the fabric of spacetime- gravitational waves. In 2015 these were finally detected directly by measuring the faint signal of two black holes colliding nearly 1.5 billion light years away.

Since then, gravitational waves detectors around the world have discovered around 300 such events, opening a new window into the universe and transforming our understanding of black holes, neutron stars, and gravity itself. In this talk, Astronomy Guide Oscar explores the deep history of the theoretical and observational work that has made these detections possible, before delving into the astonishing findings of the last decade and looking to the future and the incredible science still waiting to be done.

This presentation is part of our Dark Sky Academy - a free public outreach series designed to spark curiosity and connect our community through the wonders of astronomy.
