Weather

Stargazing is a weather‑dependent experience, and conditions in the alpine environment of Lake Tekapo can change quickly. Our team closely monitors multiple forecasts throughout the day and makes a final decision as close to tour time as possible to ensure the best possible experience for our guests.

This page provides information on the conditions we look at, and what to expect if the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor stargazing.

What We Look At

Our astronomy and operations teams assess a combination of specialist forecasts and real‑time conditions, including:

  • Cloud cover (low, mid, and high levels): Clear skies across all three layers offer the best stargazing conditions. Thanks to the unique topography of the Mackenzie basin, the mountains can often block low cloud from reaching us - so don’t panic if the forecast shows some low cloud.
  • Atmospheric clarity and stability (“seeing”): These determine how sharp and detailed celestial objects appear.
  • Wind and temperature: For guest comfort and safe telescope operation.
  • Moon phase and brightness: Brighter moonlight can affect the visibility of fainter stars and galaxies. But in the right conditions, the moon itself is a beautiful observing target!

Please note that forecasts are indicative only. The final decision is always made by our team on the night.

If conditions don’t allow for outdoor stargazing, we have you covered

On these nights, you’ll be invited to take part in our specially curated alternative night‑time experience, designed exclusively for weather‑impacted guests. This immersive experience blends the best of Dark Sky Project’s astronomy storytelling, space science visuals, and expert guidance - ensuring your visit remains engaging, informative, and memorable.

If you’d prefer to experience the night sky outdoors at a later date, we’re happy to reschedule your tour (subject to availability). Alternatively, we can provide a voucher for future use or arrange a refund, if that better suits your plans.

Our team will walk you through these options should weather impacts your visit.

When Do You Decide?

In most cases, a final call is made as close to tour time as possible, once conditions are clear enough to assess confidently. If you haven’t heard anything from our team, please check in as usual 15 minutes before your departure to receive an update on the conditions.

If you are travelling from out of town for your booking, please contact us before your journey to check in about the weather conditions.

Weather

Will my tour be cancelled if it’s cloudy?

Not necessarily. Cloud cover varies in height, movement, and density. Some conditions still allow for meaningful outdoor stargazing, while others may require an alternative experience.

What happens if the weather changes during the tour?

Our guides are experienced in adapting to changing conditions and may adjust the experience to ensure you still receive a rich and rewarding night‑time journey.

What should I wear?

Even on clear nights, temperatures can drop quickly. We recommend warm layers, closed shoes, and a windproof jacket year‑round.
