THE VIRTUAL STARGAZING EXPERIENCE:

Travel across the Milky Way from the comfort of our Dark Sky Project base

Step into the cosmos with our Virtual Stargazing Experience - a fully guided indoor evening experience perfect for families, first-time stargazers, and those short on time. Using advanced space-rendering technology, our expert astronomy guides will transport you deep into the galaxy, from navigating the Southern Cross to standing inside Saturn’s rings. You’ll feel truly immersed in the universe, without ever stepping outside.

Held inside our purpose-built theatre at Dark Sky Project Base, this experience is a fun, educational, and family-friendly alternative to outdoor stargazing. There’s no need to wait for nightfall or worry about the weather - it’s always a clear night inside.

Designed for curious minds of all ages, the experience is open to children 5 and over, with content best suited for ages 7 and up. Whether you’re travelling with tamariki (children), keen to stay cosy indoors, or simply want to understand the night sky in a new way, this is one of the most accessible ways to experience the stars in Aotearoa.

Led by a passionate astronomy guide, you'll uncover the secrets of the southern skies and gain a new appreciation of your place in the universe - through a dynamic mix of storytelling, science, and stunning visual projection.

If you're only in Lake Takapō (Tekapo) for a short time or want a guaranteed stellar experience regardless of the weather, this is the ideal way to explore the night sky.
